Shall We Dance? Race Relations and American Arts Presented by Dr. Belinda Bruner

During the twentieth century, our nation was still grappling with the repercussions of the civil war, and musical theater developed. While these two events might seem worlds apart, there is actually a strong connection. Dancing and singing together is a way of embracing. The beauty of musical and physical harmony is undeniable, and leaves no place for hatred or intolerance. When people of a minority race enter the Art world, or when individuals from different cultures dance together, there are fascinating reasons and beautiful results. We will look at intercultural relationships through dance in the musical The King and I, and discuss the ramifications of power and whiteness with regard to American ballet. In this lively tribute to the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, our own Belinda Bruner will lead us in discussion of the cultural impact of BIPOC’s entry into dance.

Cost for dinner is $15/person and may be paid at the time of registration or at the door (check or cash only). To register online, please click here. You may also register by calling the Church Office between 10am and 5pm Monday-Friday. Registration deadline is Friday, February 16th at 5:00pm.
